Buses cancelled – Jan. 6, 2014

Well, who would have thought. Our scheduled first day back is a “snow day.”  Buses are cancelled due to the weather. The school is open, however if you drop you child off at school, you must also pick them up as buses are cancelled for the full day. Parents are NOT required to call the school for students who regularly take the bus and are staying home for the day. Walkers who chose to stay home should call the office. If you do decide to walk to school, be safe and stay off and away from the roads.

We’ll look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday. Take care today please!

Welcome Winter!

I suppose it’s fitting that we’re having our Welcome Winter dance tomorrow afternoon with all this cold and snow!! Thought I’d send out a quick reminder that the dance is $3 for entry and there is also a canteen of treats (all items $1 or less). Also, to add to that reminder, I’ve been seeing a lot of students choosing not to wear their winter gear in this weather! I’ve been reminding a bunch that it is “cooler” to have mitts and a hat on in the frigid weather then to end up with frostbite - but I’m sure you can imagine their reaction. ;) So it wouldn’t hurt to hear it from us all.

Finally, I’d like to wish you all a fantastic winter break and Merry Christmas to those who are celebrating. My Christmas came a few days early when I got the keys to my new house this evening and I’ll be moving in Thursday! It will make for a busy holiday, but we’re feeling very fortunate. Stay warm, stay safe and we’ll see you in 2014! Take care!

Buses Cancelled for Snow Day – Nov 27

Buses are cancelled for the school board today due to the weather conditions. If your child normally takes a school bus, you do  not need to phone in an absence, if they are walkers who choose to stay home for the day, please phone or email their absence. If you drive your child to school, you must also pick them up at the end of the school day – buses are cancelled for the entire day. There will not be any assessments done today due to the high number of absences and anything that was due today, is able to be handed in tomorrow. Please be safe and if you ask you child to walk to school, please remind them to stay off the roads and walk on the sidewalks (even if they are not plowed). Take care.

WEJ Mitten Tree!

The Snowsuit Fund is an Ottawa-based charity that raises funds for the purchase and distribution of snowsuits to needy children, 15 years and under, in our community. They are a social organization working to deal with the consequences of poverty in our region. Now in their 32nd year of operation, they have managed to meet the challenge of keeping underprivileged kids warm during our cold winters. They have also brought dignity and hope to families who simply do not have the means to provide their children with the necessities for living.

WEJ has decided to help the Snowsuit Fund by creating our very own “WEJ MITTEN TREE”. This tree will be decorated with all the warm winter gear children will need to stay warm this season.

As the cold weather approaches, we may be digging into our stored winter gear. We ask that students, staff, and families reach out to our local children and collect either gently used or new: mittens, toques or scarves. You can also get crafty and knit your own pair. Check out our front foyer in December to see our decorated Mitten Tree.

We hope that you will consider supporting this great cause. Please share your warmth with a child.

Math Update

In math, we’re working towards the Pizza Box challenge! Students will be asked to create as many “boxes” for items that will be supplied with only one pizza box. They will be required to calculate surface areas of the pizza box and the items in order to maximize the cardboard from the pizza box, as well as volumes to calculate the “shipping” costs. We have been practicing these calculations with cylinders and reviewing other shapes. The students should be ensuring they have a good grasp of these concepts so that they can complete the task in the allotted time period and show all their work clearly. Looking forward to some creative, calculated Math! :)

We will Remember.

Our students participated in the Remembrance Day ceremony today and I couldn’t be prouder of how much they respected the event. They walked there and back with the snow falling, watched the ceremony and seemed to appreciate the point of Remembrance Day. We are back at school enjoying some hot chocolate to warm ourselves up after this brisk November day.

Progress Reports

Progress reports were sent home on Thursday! I always encourage parents to focus on the Learning Skills section of this report since it will give more insight into how your child will perform or is performing. These are essential skills in grade 8 and are a huge focus to prepare them for the transition to grade 9.

You will have also noticed an orange sheet that outlines the process for signing up for interview times (on Nov.14th in evening and Nov.15th in AM). There was also a purple slip sent home that asks parents to only sign up with their homeroom teachers on the first day the appointments are open (Monday). On Tuesday, homeroom teachers will then open some more slots to allow for interviews from students outside their homeroom class. As an 8C parent, you can, of course, still sign up on Tuesday if you missed the chance on Monday. I’d also like to make clear that I am always willing to meet with parents outside of these specific interview times. If you would prefer to arrange something with me on another date, please send me an email and we can arrange it ([email protected]).

On another note: Reminder of Remembrance Day and the need for students to dress according to the weather knowing they will be outside for an extended amount of time. Also, bring a mug for hot chocolate when we get back.

Have a great weekend!

Welcome to the new 8A blog!

General announcements, homework, assignments with due dates, test times, and resources will be put on this blog. Parents and students are able to subscribe to the site which will send email notifications of any posts (only the posts, not when homework page is edited). You are also able to easily check the site and see what your child is working on. Ask your child questions about their work or assignments, ask about upcoming tests and to see the results of tests they’ve done. Having this blog allows you to know what is happening academically with your child and support them along the way.
